Surgery of the Chordoma in Sacrococcygeal Region Via Posterior Approach

Abstract

|
Chordomas are malignant tumors arising from the remnants of the embryonic notochord. These remnants may be situated in any of the intervertebral discs and in the region of the sphenooccipital or sacrococcygeal articulations.
Chordomas may occur at the base of the skull and along the entire length of the vertebral column, the most common site being sacrococcygeal region.
As local invasion rather than distant metastasis is common, complete surgical removal is almost impossible. Preservation of sacral stability and sacral nerve pathways to the rectum and the bladder limits the extent of permissable surgery.
This report describes a case of chordoma in sacrococcygeal region removed via posterior approach.
